Spyderco Delica 4 Review

The Spyderco Delica 4 comes with a fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) handle and VG-10 stainless steel blade with a full-flat ground and a satin finish. It weighs a mere 2.5 inches and is 0.40 inches thick when closed. It is a very light and relatively thin folder that is as perfect for everyday carry as any knife can ever be. The little brother of the Spyderco Endura, the Delica retains the Endura’s strength, durability and dependability that have made both knives very popular throughout the years. It just shows that you can never put a great knife down. It may look light and frail but don’t ever let that fool you, the Delica 4 is a strong contender and a great every day carry knife.

The blade of the Delica 4 is made from VG-10 stainless steel. The “G” stands for gold, as in the gold standard in knife blades. Primarily produced in Japan, the home of the most infamous blades of all time, VG-10 is used on kitchen and everyday carry knives where they have made a name as one of the very best knife blade material in the world. The Delica 4 comes with a full-flat ground VG-10 stainless steel blade with a satin finish that not only makes it look good, it also makes it quite deadly. The Delica 4’s blade is a mere 0.09 inch thick that some may say is a bit too thin but the quality of the steel more than makes up for the thickness. The sabre or more commonly known as the V-grind makes it quite resilient and strong, able to handle a fair amount of abuse and still keep its edge. This supreme edge retention and strength, however, has a downside. Once it loses the edge, you will need a lot of time and skill, and maybe even a diamond stone sharpener to get it back to tip top shape, or edge for that matter.

The handle of the Delica 4 is fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) over stainless steel liners. The liners have been thoroughly milled out to save weight without sacrificing strength and durability. The fact that everything is bolted together means that it is fairly easy to take it apart for maintenance or whenever needed. The Delica 4 handle comes in a variety of colors which makes personalization a bit easier. Also, if you happen to get one in colors like orange or white, that pretty much assures you that you will never lose it in the woods since those colors simply jump out of the surrounding shades. The ergonomics of the handle also gives you a safe and strong level of control on the knife, the fact that it retains a design that Spyderco has been using for 20 years is a testament on how dependable the design is. The bi-directional texturing of the FRN handles further improves the grip of the handle and the jimping on top makes it virtually “slip-proof”, useful whether you are skinning that rabbit in your camp or opening a letter in the office.
